A Real Hero Living

The Core Belief

I try to ignore the Self Help the literary genre. It’s the hardcore New Yorker in me.   For the most part, I view these books as guides published by shysters looking for a quick buck.  However, Hero Living: Seven Strides to Awaken Your Infinite Power by Rudy Reyes is the rare self help guide that is worth the read.

Rudy was part of the Force Recon Marine unit Rolling Stone journalist embedded with during the invasion of Iraq in 2003.  The book and HBO miniseries entitled Generation Kill followed.

We met for a drink with some friends.  Rudy gave me a galley copy and asked me to read and comment.  Like I said, I am never keen on self help guides.  Reyes is a pal so I figured I would read it but not comment much.

Gang, his story is fascinating and his earnestness jumps off the page.   This is a rare feat in any memoir, let alone self help guide.  As I moved to Scottsdale to begin my 3-5 sentence in Post Urban culture, I wanted to re-read parts of the book to see if I could garner any ideas from Reyes.  I can’t find which box I packed it in so I am just going to have to go to the Barnes and Noble at Shea Blvd. and 90th Street to get my self another copy.

Do yourself a favor guys and do the same.  No matter what you think of Rudy or the Self Help genre, you will love the story.

Rudy is currently on the road signing copies of the book.  He’ll be in my hometown of Birmingham, MI on November 3 and then in his hometown of Kansas City, MO on November 14.  Check out his Facebook page for details.

Be safe out there my friend.  Sempre Fi!
